Music Production day (Films)

Here is some footage of the music process, And how we worked. I would tell them what I would like to hear and what instrument's I would like to use and they would create something, We would build and change it over time and here are a few short clips of what we did. And how we progressed in making some tracks.

Case study- Elements of motion graphics

2D ELEMENTS
2D elements are shown on the X and Y axis and they are normally 3 and 4 sided shapes. There are 3 different types of 2D elements.
Shell: This is linear meaning the values on the x and y are consistent.
Solid: This is a two dimensional element which is quadrilateral or triangular.
Plate: This is also 2 dimensional but represents a solid on X and Y axis.

3D ELEMENTS
3D Elements are not technically they create and illusion that an image has depth. This object is displayed also on the X and Y axis but also on the Z axis.
MATTES
A matte is the process of blanking part of an image so that is may be replaces with a different picture. This is done using a mask to cover the specific area. It's used to create one final image combing more the one other image. It is used in special effects to mask particular areas in a shot.
ALPHA CHANNELS
This is a channel mask. It can change the transparency of an edit. Alpha channels define an area as an 8 bit grey. A mask is created by duplicating a colour channel and editing it with a variety of tools.
KEY FRAMES
Key frames are shown by small diamonds in the time line. They are created to mark points of transformation. It is most often used in animation. You would put a key frame at the begging of the time lie with the starting position for your character and then a few frames or seconds later you would adjust the position, scale, rotation or opacity of the character or object you wish to animate.
LAYERS
Compositions are made up of layers. Imported items are known as separate layers.  Flat images can not be separated but PSDs can be to be edited. You can also create more layers in after effects such as cameras, adjustment layers, lights, null objects, text and shapes.
COMPOSITE MODES
This is the different types of combining composites into one composition.
Normal,Add, Subtract,Difference,Multiply,Screen,Overlay, Hard light, Soft Light, Darken and Lighten.

The variations are determined on the colours and how they react.

Corporate video evaluation

What was your brief and how did you negotiate your ideas?
We Wrote a brief template and sent it to our client to fill out, Once she had done this we arranged a meeting with her to discuss the ideas and project further. It was decided that a lot of the creative decisions would be left to us, there fore we didn't feel the need to negotiate ideas.
How did you work as a team and within the agreed timescale?
Our client was aware of our short deadline for the project and was more than happy  and helpful to arrange the meetings as soon as possible. We worked well as a team by our use of communication we kept every one informed of the decisions and plans as they went along.
What constraints were there – time/financial/locations/legal/artistic differences?
I felt our biggest constraint was time, I believe had we been given more time our video would have been a lot better. The locations where also a big problem as being in a class room can be loud and busy and not big enough to fit the camera on its tripod.
Was the finished product as good as what you thought it was going to be? If so why, if not, why not?
I think this was an okay production, I feel the visual aspects where very pleasing to the client and potential viewers but the audio had some problems though out due to the environment we where filming and recording in.
What feedback did you receive from Facebook, Youtube and your client?
Our client said that the video was kept on topic but still got the point across. She wanted one shot changed so once that was sorted out she was fully happy with the product. People on Facebook and YouTube said it was shot well and was kept fun but informative.
What kind of briefs have you worked with and what was the most effective?
I personally prefer a verbal brief because then and their you can see what they are looking for and you can discuss straight away the pro's and con's to the suggestions they have asked for. There is no miscommunication via a written brief and no confusing emails.
How effective was communication between you and the client and you and your team?  What strategies did you use to achieve this?  What strategies could you use to improve? What obstacles were there and how did you overcome them?
I think the communication was ok. The communication between our team was very good as we saw each other a lot and are both good at replying to emails promptly. However it was often quite hard to get hold of our client as she is very busy. It could have been improved by possibly knowing where her office is so we could pop by whenever we needed to talk to her as we could often wait up to a week for a reply.I also feel that the organisation with some tutors and their awareness of us filing their class hadn't been made clear, and the fact that we had to provide the proof that each individual student was willing to be filmed was not a professional environment
Name three things about the final project that you are pleased with
1) Interviews with students and teachers
2) Dynamic shots
3) Music choice
Name three things you would want to improve
1) quality of sound in some interviews
2) More film time for improved shots
3) diverse of classes willing to be filmed.

Soundtrack Sheets- Editing (Upload jingle)

I crated a little jingle that i would feel could be in a film that has a bar scene as i was unsure of what to do. I used sound track pro to create the little jingle you will hear. I used 5 different instruments. I used piano, saxophone, drum kits, Shakers and A female breath in-between the saxophone playing to create a real feeling to the music as if it was recorded live.

Jingle for film link HERE!!!!

Sound track sheet- Devising and planning finish

1)
- To create this sound track i plan on working with two people, Aidan Bell and Kirk Duncan. They will help me to figure out the sounds and instruments i would like to use for the soundtrack they will also play the instruments as i have no skills in playing. They will have no influence over the final sound as i will make sure it is my own choice of style and sound. They will help to edit the work together to make the best sound track possible.

-The only other person involved for the sound track would be me. If this was a major film there would be many other people involved for example the director the producer and the editor they would have a huge influence in the music choice and the sounds created for the film.

What is Spotting?

The spotting session is when a director and composer get together to watch the film and decide where the music is going to be and what it’s going to do. This occurs before the composer starts writing the music.

What is a Locked Picture?

Picture locking is the stage in a editing a film when all changes to the film have been done and approved. It is then sent on too other stages such as audio mixing. It allows the composer to have a final picture to create his sound track too as discussed in the spotting session.

2)
Birds singing, On site sound recording. Using a shot gun mic directed in the area of bird song.

Rubble being kicked, Foley, Using a bucket of stones and kicking in the box?

Thrown Knife, Foley, Using a kitchen utensil for the sound of the metal and a air tube to create the sound  of it moving through the air.

Music- Violins,Piano,Drums,Orchestral, Sound proofed area and recording studio. Pre composed with the correct techniques to create the atmospheric sounds needed.

3)
Location report
Open Field (Camp Site)
This site had no acoustics there is also a risk of noise from airplanes and wind.
For this filming i would use a shotgun mic and potentially a hidden clip mic to pic up the actors well. I would also use a wind guard to decreases the chance of overpowering wind noise.

Campsite hall.
This location once again has no acoustics, there is a risk of echoing because of the type of space, I will pad the walls to reduce the amount of echo to create a cleaner sound of the actors talking and use a shotgun mic without the wind guard to make sure the best sound is picked up.

Software.
I have many softwares available to me.
Garage band
Soundtrack pro
Final cut pro

To me they all have a similar set up, you can create and edit your own soundtrack you input.
i would prefer to use soundtrack pro as it is the one i feel most comfortable with and has more soundscapes and foley that i could use in the film.

Explain
MP3
This is an encoding format for digital audio which uses a form of lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio streaming or storage.
Pro's
Thif file format is good for for small portable files
Con's
Reputation for poor sound quality.

AIFF
(Audio inerchange file format) this is an audio file format used for personal computers and storing sound data. the format was developed by apple inc.
Pro's
Don't have to compress files.
Con's
Takes A lot of storage space

WAVE
A format for storing uncompressed audio files.
Pro's
They are linear files meaning they can contain the amount of data that is directly relates to the length of the recording.
Con's
Must have a lot of storage space.

4)
Public domain materials.
Public domain materials are work that has either had all right expired, The author have explicitly put a work into the public domain, or there where never and copyrights.

In USA no sound recording will enter the public domain until 2067 unless places there by the creators.

Downloading from the internet
Downloading from the internet can be a very risk task, but if it is in the public domain then its a free for all unless bought from another person and then copyrighted as their own. When it is in the free domain then you have to at least credit the artist, although a few artists on the public domain ask for small donations to use their materials as well as being credited. Ripping from youtube is illegal and against most company policies including YouTube's, even if it your own material you are ripping from the site, it is still a serious offence and can ban you from YouTube.

Licensed music.
Music licensing is the licensed use of copyrighted music. Music licensing is intended to ensure that the owners of copyrights on musical works are compensated for certain uses of their work. A purchaser has limited rights to use and reproduce the recorded work without a separately arranged agreement.

Summary Of collage Brief

Research-Show an understanding of the codes and conventions of corporate programming
-Research what a promotional video is and look at codes and conventions, legal issues and production practice.
-Look at the structure of briefs, the negotiation process and the opportunities you have within this project.

Planning-We must find a real client (cannot be friends pretending to have a business)
-Should develop ideas, create mind maps and draft scripts.
-Then plan proposal, storyboard, shot list, shooting schedule, location report, risk assessment, budget and list of crew/interviewees.
-Production meetings should be made and we should write notes.

The ShootWe must shoot and edit the video and upload it to our blogs. It will then go onto the college Facebook page and youtube channel where it will be entered into a competition.

Evaluating This can be done in several ways much as an audio file, a video blog, a 500 word essay or directors commentary.

We must touch upon the following:

-What was your brief and how did you negotiate your ideas?
-How did you work as a team and within the agreed timescale?
-What constraints were there – time /financial /locations /legal/ artistic differences?
-Was the finished product as good as what you thought it was going to be? If so why, if not, why not?
-What feedback did you receive from Facebook, Youtube and your client?

Viral Advert-Development of product

http://youtu.be/ytS7WMqGy_I

This is my first draft of my viral advert without music i have selected. I have used motion tracking and then added words on top, I then created a black solid and created keyframes to move it i then added in some footage which moves to text moving across the screen. I did this using a 3D camera and creating the text moving back on the screen,Using the Z axes. I also added effects to the text which where glow and add rust.

I noticed in this first draft i had made a spelling error and then went on to change it. I am now going to add my music selection as well.

This  is my final viral advert, I have changed the spelling error and added the music which i feel creates the final atmosphere for the project. http://youtu.be/CtNuUr79sPs

Memoirs of a serial Killer
Log line: This is the chilling story from inside the cells and mind of a horrific serial killer. What drove her to becoming the murder she was, What is the story behind the dead faces running through her mind.
Pro's: Creative story line

          Great character development
Con's: Expensive special effects make-up
           Hard access sets and props

The Elemental's
Log Line: Five ordinary people discover they have the power of the world riding on their shoulders, They are the balance of the world. What they don't know is that the seven deadly siblings are out to ruin the world. But first they plan to destroy the elemental's. Will they prevail or will evil win this time?
Pro's: Creative story line
          Interesting character development
          Creative effect
Con's: Expensive equipment needed
Time for filming would be very long
           After effects

The untold fairy-tale.
Log Line: Ebony is an ordinary down to earth girl, What she doesn't know is power is waiting to overtake her body. Who turned her into the evil she is too become and can true love prevail?

Final Major Project- Proposal

iiI plan on making a fairy tale, But not like the ones we have come to know and love. One like the original writers intended to have a meaning. My story is all about what bullying can do to one child. How it can back fire on to the bully themselves and the mental torture you put the other through bullying them. This is a fairy tale about a girl called Ebony who inside has a power that has lied dormant for years until she is pushed to the point where she can't control it anymore to the point the power consumes her. She falls in love with the prince but she is not the desired lover for the prince. Will Cinderella get prince charming or will Ebony's love prevail? What happens when a princess lies and becomes the evil. This story is aimed to be a prequel for the other fairy-tales we know and love what happened before snow white and the seven dwarfs and what happened to sleeping beauty this is the story of how they where made to have their happy ever afters.
i
i      I aim to achieve this vibe and look using deep colours and having a very large musical influence throught the film to help create the mood i am looking for with my audience i also aim to use short sharp camera movements to create tension and to have a very choppy editing style.

l     To myself i feel this film will be targeted at a female audience between the ages of 15-19, females who also have a love for other fantasy romance stories such as twilight and buffy the vampire slayer. I will also be able to reach a wider audience with this project as i belive it crosses to genres of romance and fantasy.

I intend to film during the Easter holidays i believe it will take me 2 days to film the entire thing i think it will take me roughly 2 weeks to edit and then a following week to produce the original sound score.

I will also be producing some posters for the film and a book of the actors who where in my film, and a viral advert for the film.
All in all i believe this film will be a success and will run smoothly.

Sound track sheets- Developing your own soundtrack.

Developing your own soundtracks

1) Uncomfortable, Creepy, Hopeful, disturbing.

2) The sound track for my film will help explain my story by creating tension when it can't be shown only through words. It will build up a sense of uneasiness in the audience as the watch the film. It will help to convey the emotions and the sense of feeling i want to portray to the audience, It should show the audience how they should be feeling while keeping a constant theme throughout the film.

3)

Uncomfortable feeling.

Live sound

I will create this feeling because of the very little sound in the surrounding area that i am filming in. The only sound you will be able to hear is the sound of the birds and the uncomfortable silence.

Adr/Foley/SFX

I won't be using any of these elements to create this feeling as i feel that the silence and the atmosphere of the place of filming will create that its self.

Music

The music made for the film will have a very uncomfortable undertone. Which will help create the atmosphere throughout  the film until the end.

Ambience/ soundscapes.

The ambience and soundscapes for the film all have come from the live recording because of the sounds while filming that where created.

Creepy feeling

Live sound

The live sound isn't very creepy, its a very fresh sound because of the outdoor environment.

ADR/Foley/SFX

I haven't added any of these elements again because i plan on obtaining this feeling from the music.

Music

I have created this sound with the use of an uncomfortable clang, This creates a creepy and uncomfortable feeling in the viewer. I will also place an underlying noise that sounds creepy with the tone of the instruments.

Ambience/Sound scapes

I haven't added in any sound scales and the ambience is created through the use of the music throughout the film .

Hopeful

Live Sound

The live sound from the film will also be very hopeful wight he sound of bird song meaning life and resolve hearing this throughout the film should create a hopeful feeling in the viewer, hoping there is some resolve throughout the ending of the film.

ADR/Foley/SFX
I will add in some bird song if none is attained on the day of film, I believe this will help create a hopeful atmosphere

Music

The music for the final stages of film will increase in hopefulness it will try and resolve the issues posed to the characters in the film, It will have an upbeat tune and will increase as time goes on.

Ambience/Soundscapes

The soundscape for this section will solely realie on the bird song. The ambience will be created with the use of music in the final stages of the film.

Disturbing

Live sound

The silence made from the live recording should make a disturbing moment, i would like to create this with the use of silence and no sound track

ADR/FOLEY/SFX

I may add in some white noise to help create this feeling of dead silence and to give it an undertone so the noise feels uncomfortable and worrying

Music

The music to create this will use a lot of violins and piano, I feel these 2 instruments will help create the mood and add too the emotions the viewers will feel when watching these sections of the film.

Ambience and Soundscapes

The ambience will be created using silence and the only soundscape i plan on adding could be white noise.

Case study- Formats

Compression
Lossy
Lossy compression works on the bases of removing the unnecessary bits of information, By this it means that if you film a person on a certain background it will register that the back ground will stay the same, Meaning it will only need to capture the moving object in the foreground meaning it is quicker than lossless compression. With lossy compression you can't get the original file back after it has been compressed. You are now stuck with the compressions programmes re interpretation of the original. Meaning you can't use this for something that needs be reproduced exactly.
Lossless
Lossless compression allows you to recreate the original file exactly. The idea of lossless compression is based on the idea of breaking the file in a a smaller form for transmission or storage and then putting it back together on the other end so it can be used again. For example if a file has a blue sky mod of the individual pixels are a little bit different. To make this picture smaller without compromising the resolution you have to change the colour value for some pixels. If the file has a lot of blue sky it would pick one colour of the blue and that could be used for every pixel. It re-writes the programme so the value of every pixel refers back to that value.
Video Files
.MPG
Also known as a MPEG stands for the moving picture experts group. Files with .mpg extensions often contain movies used over the internet. The videos contained within the .mpg files are compressed video files. These files allow users to download the files more quickly without sacrificing much of the picture quality. This file could be used for anything internet based, including viral marketing and email attachments.
.MP4
A MP4 file format is the file moray that most websites use to store digital audio and video steams. The name is short for MPEG-4. MP4 files are often used to store digital media on computers, mobile devices and remote hard drives. The files commonly stored in the MP4 file format are usually audio files, video files and pictures. Many of todays portable devices used the MP4 format to plat movies and videos on the go. For example smart phones and streaming media.
.MOV
The .Mov file format is often used to save movie files and video clips to a users hard drive or other media device. It is the file extension used by the QuickTime media software that is distributed by apple. Files that are save in .Mov format are compressed making it easier to download and stream. Many of the movies and videos that are available on the internet are .mov files.
.AVI
Also known as Audio Video Interleave. The .avi file is a container file format. Container files are a shell file that contains a variety of files within. container files with the .avi extension often contain audio and video data. The data contained in one of these files may be encoded, allowing the files to use less compression the other file formats. However this file format has a 2GB size limit restricting the use of them.
.WMV
WMV stands for Windows Media Video. A .wmv file is a compressed video format that Microsoft developed for the internet. Many videos found online are in .wmv format. This type of file allows for large files to be converted to smaller files while still protecting the quality of the video. This keeps the file size manageable without loosing picture quality. When a .wmv file is played it decompresses the file reader white is is being played back.
.FLV
A .flv file stands for Flash live video. This file format is used to deliver video content over the internet to a user's computer. The .flv format allows high rates of compression white retaining the quality. This allows the files creators to the mile sizes manageable and makes it easier for viewers to watch online. Popular websites that use this file format are; YouTube and Google Video
SWF
Also known as a Small Web Format. The .swf file format was designed to deliver graphics and animations over the internet to be viewable on a computer. Animations and graphics that are designed with the adobe software are saved in a .swf format. These files contain both text and graphics. .swf files are "end product files" for users viewing and are read only files that cannot be changed or edited.
3GP
.3GP stands for 3rd generation Partnership project. The .3gp file format is a multimedia container format that is often used for 3G-enabled mobile phones. The 3gp file is a mobile friendly version of the .MP4 files that are popular for desktop use. The 3gp format was developed to make file sizes smaller so that they would use less bandwidth, making it easier to stream videos and music to phones.
ASF
.asf stands for Advanced Streaming Format. The .asf format is not a file is and of itself, but rather a file container format. file with the .asf extension contain three different objects including a header file, a data object and a optional index object. the header contains information about the media data. the data object is the actual media stream the file contains. of optional index allows for random access to data within the file.

File Sizes
Resolution
The display resolution of a television is the number of pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. It is usually quoted as "width x height" with the units in pixels: for example. "1024x768" means the width of pixels is 1024 and the height is 768.
Data rate
Also known as a Data Transfer Rate, this covers both internal rate (moving data between the disk surface and the controller drive) and the external rate.
Frame Rate
Also known as frame frequency and frames per second (fps) this is the frequency rate at which an imaging device produces consecutive (one after the other) images called frames. Frame rate is often spoken about in frames per second (fps) and is also expressed in progressive scan monitors as hertz (Hz)  Key frame rate
A key frame rate is a point that defines the starting and ending points of any smooth transition. A sequence of key frames define which movement the viewer will see.

Aspect Ratio
The aspect ratio of an image describes the proportional relationship between its width and its height
4:3
This is the standard size for the 20th century. It's the universal format. 16:9
This is the size for the universal high definition TV and European digital television.

Media Players
Flash Player
Adobe flash player is a  software for viewing multimedia and streaming video and audio. It can run on the web and on mobile devices. But some version must run on an operating system. It is commonly used to run games and animations that are found on webpages.
Quick Time
This is a media player it was created by Apple that plays QuickTime files. You can convert files using the pro version of the software and also edit and create things. You can watch videos from camera, phones, mac and or PC.
Windows Media Player
This was created by Microsoft, it can be used for playing audio video and viewing images. It can also be used to rip and burn things from and to a CD, The latest version was released in 2009.
Real Media
This is a cross platform software it is used to play recorded media. It runs MP3, MPEG, QUICKTIME, WINDOWS MEDIA and their own RealVideo and RealAudio Formats.
